Floating vs Knock-Down Bed Frame: Which to Specify

A freight-led comparison of floating and knock-down metal bed frames — what each is built for, how packed volume differs, and how to choose by container economics rather than looks.

What each frame actually is

Floating bed frames (JL, L)

A recessed base and hidden support structure give the bed a floating silhouette while keeping a full steel load path. The L series adds a motion-sensor LED light strip. Bed height 250 mm. These are the premium, photograph-well option for residential and hospitality lines. See the range →

Knock-down bed frames (CZ1, CZ2)

Both series break down into flat components and bolt together on site. CZ1 is the general-purpose 12-slat frame; CZ2 adds a 13th slat and a reinforced structure for contract and hospitality duty. Packed volume starts at 0.06 m³. See the range →

Packed volume is the decider

Freight is charged on volume, not on how a bed looks in a showroom. A floating frame of a given mattress size ships as a bulkier carton; a knock-down frame of the same size ships flat. On our own range the gap is roughly two to one.

For a 1500×2000 mm frame, the floating JL packs around 0.17 m³, while the knock-down CZ1 packs 0.08 m³. Multiply that across a container and the knock-down version lands materially cheaper per unit — even when the ex-works price is similar.

Measured packed volume, per set

  • Floating JL / L: 0.16–0.20 m³
  • Knock-down CZ1 / CZ2: 0.06–0.08 m³
  • Fixed JY: 0.13–0.20 m³
  • Slat base SLAT: 0.10–0.15 m³

When to specify floating

Choose a floating frame when the brief is about appearance and the order is not volume-bound: premium residential lines, showrooms, and hospitality rooms where the bed is part of the photographed experience. The concealed-leg look reads as high-end, and the LED option (L series) suits hotels and model apartments. The trade-off is freight and a slightly heavier carton — acceptable when the margin carries it.

When to specify knock-down

Choose knock-down when volume, delivery cost or handling decide the order: e-commerce fulfilment (parcel-friendly cartons, low damage), dormitory and staff-housing fit-outs (a full block in one container instead of two), and any market where staircase or elevator delivery is tight. CZ2 carries the same flat-pack advantage with a reinforced structure for harder contract use. Browse CZ1 / CZ2 →
